Dr. Jimmy Walker is an independent water microbiology consultant, scientific writer and director of Walker on Water. Before setting up his consultancy Jimmy worked for Public Health England as the scientific leader in water microbiology, biofilms and decontamination. He also managed a range of research projects in water microbiology involving rapid detection technologies to understand the presence and control of opportunistic waterborne pathogens. Jimmy has over 30 years experience and has worked closely with a range of hospitals and was involved with the incidents involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms on water outlets and the fatalities in Northern Ireland. In additon to being involved in Legionaires’ disease outbreak advice he also led teams working on Mycobacteria chimaera biofilms and associated heater cooler outbreaks.
Dr Walker's expertise specialises in being able to understand the role of water in the transmission of infectious diseases and working closely with those involved to seek solutions and protect patients. Jimmy has an ability to translate his experiences and those of his colleagues into written work and this has been reflected in his extensive publication record and associated books. As a consequence Jimmy has worked closely with the Department of Health (DH England) and the Health and Safety Executive in writing and developing national and international guidance on the microbiology of water and decontamination in healthcare. His work on decontamination led to research in prions and contributions to national guidance including the recent 2020 publication of IPG196 NICE Guidance. Dr Walker has over 30 years’ experience in public health microbiology with an extensive publication record in peer reviewed journals and books including the 2 nd edition of “Decontamination in Hospitals and Healthcare” (2020).
